• Overview of the Immigration Legal System (90 minutes)
o Speaker: Kathleen Gasparian, Esq. and Leah Spivey, Esq.
o Topics covered: This seminar will cover the basics of the immigration system and an overview of the different types of visas.
• Immigration Psychological Evaluations (90 minutes)
o Proposed speaker: Cecilia Racine, LCSW
o Topics covered: How to conduct a persuasive and compelling evaluation for people seeking relief under asylum guidelines.
• Social Workers as Department of Justice Accredited Representatives (90 minutes)
o Proposed speaker: Michele Pistone, Esq., Representative from Villanova University VIISTA program
o Topics covered: Information learned in the VIISTA and how people like social workers can become DOJ accredited representatives/advocates for people going through the immigration process.
• Context of Migration from Central America and Mexico and Implications for Mental Health and Trauma (60 minutes)
o Proposed speaker: Mary Held, Ph.D., LCSW
o Topics covered: This presentation will cover the context and factors leading to migration from Central America and Mexico and the implications for mental health and trauma.
• Wrap up (30 minutes)
The National Organization of Forensic Social Work, provider # 1823, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. National Organization of Forensic Social Work maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 07/18/2023–07/18/2026. Social workers registered for ce credit who complete this course will receive 7.0 continuing education credits.
